The Strike of 1997!!!

THE REAL ISSUE AND ITS PROBLEMS
It has been a disappointing and dull year for tamil cinema so far. With producers, directors and technicians torn apart by the long standing strikes, the tamil film industry stands still, stunned by how the situation took such a serious turn. Most of this edition of tamil movie news will be dedicated to describing the current situation in Kodambaakkam and how the entire tamil cine industry appears to be shattered by the vai shandai and sarcastic congratulation bouquets...

A few important terms, just to make reading easier:

FEFSI: Film Employees Federation of South India, which appears to be the meeting spot for 26 different unions representing group dancers, cinematographers, stunt men and even tea boys.

TNCEF: Easier to remember as the group who call themselves Thamizh Padaippaaligal..

Nadigar Sangam led by Actor Radha Ravi

Cinema Artists' Union led by Actor Vijaykumar
The verbal and physical fights and the abusive language is just the beginning to describe this nasty strike which has brought 22,000 workers and 40 films worth over Rs. 125 Crores to a complete standstill. This entire strike is not about huge groups of workers starving or about producers losing money over films or anything else. It is about each and every individual's EGO. The focus is on how one can overpower the other, not on how to work together to make tamil cinema a happier and healthier field. The huge amount of love and respect that we have all had for the tamil cine field may never be same again!..People do not dispute that this strike had been expected for quite a while!.. Members of FEFSI continued to have ill feelings about the happennings in Kodambaakkam, but kept mum so that the problem would not blow out of proportion. All the grudge, anger and disappointment took vishwa roobam on July 5th, 1997 during Balu Mahendra's, now well-touted production Raman Abdullah. A deal signed 30 years ago states that Tamil cinema producers and directors should hire only FEFSI workers to work in their films. This being the case, Mahendra hired some non-FEFSI workers to perform some duties on his film. Initially, many members of FEFSI along with their leader Vijayan marched to the Raman Abdullah set to point out his mistake, asking him to correct it. In the huge jagadaa which followed, people claimed that Vijayan yelled out Packup, laying the first steps to what has now become the 'no solution' problem. Though Vijayan and his FEFSI members had been taunted by Mahendra repeatedly playing some lyrics from a song in R.A., Naan enna sonnaalum ketka maateenga.. pongada ponga. This Vijayan used as his excuse for the ragalai created at the shooting!..Soon afterwards, the Producers' council held a symbolic one day strike in support of Balu Mahendra. This led to a bigger uproar, as Vijayan declared an all-out strike for FEFSI, since the Producers' council had not conformed to rules in the deal signed last year, under Chief Minister Karunanidhi's thalamai. That deal states that any union in tamil cinema should provide adequate notice to the government and to other unions before calling an official strike (even if it is a symbolic one day strike, as in the case with the Producers' Council) Inge dhaan ulaga magaa poar arambiththadhu!..Things really started getting violent, as some producers, directors and actors became extremely tired and impatient with the whole FEFSI vs. rest of Kodambakkam jab-a-thon. As talks continued between the various groups, especially between FEFSI, Chief Minister Karunanidhi, Producers' Council, and the various tamil cinema groups, the conversations became heated and went out of control. In the center of the violence and chaos, directors K.Balachandar and Bharathiraja presumed they were doing a good deed and created the Thamizh Padaippaalligal Sangam, and the Thamizh Pada Thozhillaargal Sangam. Bharathiraja and Balachandar began a virulent campaign to recruit FEFSI members and technicians, along side actors, actresses and directors to join their newly formed Padaippaalligal Sangam. Soon afterward, artists and technicians started taking sides, leading to heated and sometimes violent debates over which 'union/sangam' was better..At some point, many directors and producers did try to resume shooting, but since cameras and other equipment were always being rented from FEFSI headquarters.. more prachchanais. Films like Periya Idaththu Maapillai and Swarnamukhi surprisingly continued to shoot, but only for a few days, as FEFSI outright refused to loan any equipment to all whom they considered 'traitors.' One day before shooting, FEFSI Vijayan contacted actor Jayaram, asking him not to go to Pe.Id.Maa. shooting, as he claimed he had so many starving workers waiting for a solution to the problem. Jayaram retorted: "Naan oruvan nadikaavittaal ungal prachchani theerum yendraal, naan nadikka maatten! Adhay samayam, ennai nambi padamedukkum iyakkunar, thaayaarippaallar-aiyum paarkkanume, Mr. Vijayan."

FEFSI increased its pressure from all ends, which immediately paralyzed the little progress people seemed to have made. Certain interesting developments led the two big stars in Kodambakkam to eventually participate in the strike happennings. Many directors, rombave thimirr-aaga, issued statements like "Kamal-um Rajini-yum enna komba? Nalla director-gal vandhu ivargalai uruvaakkaa vittaal yengayppa indha rendu peyirum?" Soon after these words reached Rajini, he spent close to 30 minutes on a long distance call to Kamal. A close source to Rajini divulges that Rajini, Kamal Thaangal Yaar yendru padaippaaligal-ukku kaatti viduvadhaaga mudivaanadhu. The results of this 30 minute talk will be discussed soon.
But before this phone call, Rajini had called Kamal 15 days before. He told Kamal that he did not want to be directly involved in the strike, as he feared it might take a very unexpected DIRTY turn if he did. As he saw the strike problem getting worse, he wanted to desperately find a solution to the problem, so that shooting could begin on August 1st, 1997. Accordingly, on behalf of Rajini and Kamal, three cottages were rented in Film City to have the negotiations. After almost 15 hours of continuous talks, both Kamal and Rajini had convinced FEFSI Vijayan to somewhat submit to a new plan: To forget all the incidents of this strike. Create a Thamizh thirai ulaga mempaattu kuzhu which joins FEFSI and Thamizh Padaipaalligal under one umbrella. Bharathiraja could be the leader of the Kuzhu if he feels so strongly. The Kuzhu will conduct 'merpaarvai' on both FEFSI and Thamizh Padaippaaligal and will serve in both group's interests. This, both Kamal and Rajini believed, will decrease the EGO and the 'naan nee' potti manapaanmai that is currently rampant in the industry. After blowing off packets and packets of cigarettes, Rajini became tired and disgusted, to find that directors refused to go along with the plan, even after FEFSI Vijayan agreed to it. Very unhappy with the situation, Rajini felt rather disgruntled. After the directors's comments, "Rajini Kamal yenna komba?".. and the 30 minute phone call, Rajini and Kamal had decided to follow the same "EGO route" as the directors to beat them in the strike. (Poruththadhu podhum pongi yezhu...) It was indeed at the juncture, Kamal announced in a press conference on July 31st that he wished to resume shooting Chaachi 420 (remake of Avvai Shanmughi) with the help of FEFSI. He expressed his kobam and varuththam at the 'superiority complex' demonstrated by the thamizh padaipaalligal director group, as well as the total lack of respect for artists like Rajini and him.

This created the path for the worst split ever seen in Tamil Cinema history. In support of Kamal's decision to join and aid FEFSI, actors Vijaykumar, Karthik, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, Chandrasekar and Napolean have also joined FEFSI in aiding Vijayan and some 22,000 workers.

Actors Bhagyaraj, Visu, S.V.Sekhar, Radha Ravi, Arjun, Ramki, Karan, Charuhasan, Actresses Roja, Rambha, Meena, Nagma, Kushboo, Revathi, Sangavi, Oorvasi, Manorama and many others extended their support to director Bharathiraja and the Thamizh Padaippaalligal.Comedian Manivannan, who was once a director, now a full fledged actor, has kept mum throughout the strike. People blame his innate communist feelings for his decision. Napolean made good friends with many of the stunt men in FEFSI. They seemed to have aided him during his time of dire necessity and he felt obliged enough to join them. His Guru Bharathiraja netri kann-ai thirandhu vittar!.. Kuttram Kuttrame!.. Similar scenario for Karthik as he had commented: "Amaa sir.. ennai oru director arimuga paduththinaar. Oppukkaren. Aana, naan irubadhu director-galai arimuga paduththi-irukkiren."
Sathyaraj became the neja 'villain' in many people's eyes. He was caught warning some colleagues, "Veen prachchanai yedhukku.. Moonji-la acid adichcha yenna pannuveenga.. pullai kutti-ya mirattinaa naamma yenna seiya mudiyum?" But some actresses are not taking it easy. Actresses Revathi, Oorvasi and Ranjeetha are right in the midst of the problem by conducting negotiations between various unions in the tamil cinema industry. All the three truly believe that a good ending is in sight!
Yet, Kamal experienced the worst case scenario amongst all the stars. The day after he began his Hindi film shooting, flower wreaths from various directors started arriving at his home. Each one had the similar looking note with the exact words: Sagodhara paasaththai kaal-il pottu midhiththa kamal-ukku engal nanri. Within a few minutes, a police truck also arrived, with police officers telling him, he needed their protection. Kamal was angry, unhappy and confused at this point. Another person who understood, sympathized and offered support to Kamal and FEFSI was Producer Kunjumon (more on his story later!)

THE VERY LATEST

***Since the virulent strikes subsided just a little, only a handful of films were released: Raman Abdullah, Nerukku Nerr, Kalyaana Vaibhogam, Pagaivan, Kaadhali, Periya Idaththu Maappillai, and Kaadhal Palli. Many of these films range from mediocre to pathetic. Even worse, most of the films above show signs of the strike's immediate negative effects on the picturization and continuity. The scarier prospect is knowing that there might not be a new tamil movie releasing for Deepavali 1997. Maybe K.T.K. is thinking otherwise :-)

***After all the begging and pleading with Art Director Thotta Tharani to leave FEFSI, going to waste, Director Shankar has signed a newcomer, Balu, to be the new art director for his film Jeans.

***Initially, K.S.Ravikumar was asked for directing Kamal's latest (interim production before Marudhanaayagam), Kaadhala Kaadhala. He was told that the strike would solve itself eventually and that he should proceed with directing. But KSR stood his ground and refused to direct unless and until an absolute solution was provided for the problem. Singeetham Srinivasa Rao took the director's helm instead!

Meena was offered a role in KK, but she refused to act until the strike came to an end. It was because Rajini had requested them that both Rambha and Soundarya agreed to act in the film along with Prabhudeva. Moreover, Rajini has gone one step further and requested two big productions companies in Chennai to begin shooting and extend support to FEFSI workers. Furthermore, in a rasasiya koottam in his home, Kamal has also indicated that he would begin Marudhanaayagam with the help of FEFSI workers.

***Insiders whisper that a Maniratnam and Rajeev Menon koottani film is in the works!.. The hero of the film will be none other than Manoj Kumar - Bharathiraja's son. Interestingly, Manoj has served as Maniratnam's assistant for a considerable number of years. The fact that all the directors have ganged up together in the directors vs. actors/technicians shandai, has indeed made way for BR's son to enter the tamil cine field with his guru's nal aasi!
***Meanwhile, Bharathiraja plans to take an all-out computer graphics, naveena thozhil nutppam(as he calls it!) konda city-based tamil flick and has already packed off his son, Manoj, to the U.S. to learn the latest tricks and jaalam in the computer graphics field.
Amongst all the film news, the unfortunate happenings within FEFSI cannot be ignored. As of today, over 8 people have committed suicide, as they were unable to find a better solution to the strike themselves. Many have practically orphaned their children with their dismal decisions, leaving many artists like Ajeethkumar (who participated in one of the sava oorvalams) in tears.
Hope this is not the final solution that the tamil cinema industry has provided for all its workers.

Every day is a learning experience, says Lakshmi!!!

"I used to tell my producers give me the advance amount first, I will learn thes language in no time."
A veteran in the cinema field, Lakshmi has acted with all top stars of the South Indian film industry. She talks about her film career and also her recent work in the small screen.
I keep a distinct line between my personal and professional life. Anybody can ask me about my films. But when it comes to my personal life, I would not like to reveal or react to anything. I would not like to share my privacy with anybody.
When I was doing my schooling I did my first film "Jeevanamsam" (1968). The day I travelled in a bus I realised that I was a star as passengers turned around and stared at me. But I see acting only as another profession.
I aspired to become a Supreme Court lawyer. I did not know how I got this idea. I always wanted to be independent and stand on my own legs. But in those days such ideas were not acceptable to the people, especially in a Brahmin community.
My first Tamil film "Jeevanamsam," my first Telugu film "Baandhavyaalu," produced by actor S.V. Ranga Rao in which Savithri acted as my mother, and my first Kannada film "Goa Dalli C.I.D. 999" with Rajkumar were all released on the Deepavali day in 1968. It was a record for a debut actor. It is like a cricketer scoring 300 runs on the first innings of his debut.
I have done more than 500 films in all the South Indian languages, Hindi and Sinhalese. Majority of them are from Tamil and Telugu. I insisted on dubbing my own voice in all the languages I acted. It was always easy for children and women to learn languages. I used to tell my producers give me the advance amount first, I will learn the language in no time.
If at all I want to show my films to my great grandchildren I would probably recommend all of them. I have done mainly heroine roles. A few of them in Tamil would be "Samsaram Oru Minsaram," "Sirai," "Silanerangalil Sila Manidhargal" and some 10 films in Telugu.
I adore all the artists I worked with, particularly Savithri, Sarojadevi, Padmini. Jayalalithaa is a bundle of beauty and brains. In this generation my favourites are Revathy and Preity Zinda. The actors include Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan and Brad Pitt.
In the small screen, I started off with "Kathaialle Nijam" in Vijay Television and then moved to `Achamillai Achamillai" in Jaya TV.
Every day is a learning experience. Whatever role has come my way, I have tried to do a good job of it. There is the satisfaction of having given my best.
I must thank almighty, my parents, producers and directors and my well-wishers who have stood by me. I must also thank my husband Siva Chandran who is more like a good friend for 20 years and my daughter Samuktha for being with me in pleasure and pain.

AIADMK, DMK clash in Assemby
CHENNAI: The State Assembly on Wednesday witnessed noisy scenes with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, supported by its allies, and the main Opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam crossing swords on the issue of political interference in police administration.
Trouble started when Pattali Makkal Katchi leader G.K.Mani said the police, under the previous Government, arrested M.Karunanidhi, who was then in the Opposition, resorted to lathicharge on presspersons, attacked then Union Minister Murasoli Maran and foisted cases on Opposition leaders.
Leelavathi murder
Denying political interference in the police administration under the previous Government, the AIADMK recalled the murder of Leelavathi, a councillor of the Madurai Corporation, during the earlier DMK rule. The AIADMK alleged that the police had harassed its activists.
Intervening, Mr.Karunanidhi said a DMK activist was arrested in the Leelavathi murder case on the same day of the incident.
The then regime also agreed to the demand that instead of Government counsel, that of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would appear in the case.
Responding to Dalit Panthers of India leader K.Selvam's appeal, the Chief Minister said the Government was prepared to help him seek justice from court.
Panel sought to monitor police officers
Mr.Selvam said the Central Bureau of Investigation had said that three of the four cases registered against him were baseless and in the remaining one, legal opinion had been sought. Pleading with the members not to politicise the issue, he asked the Government to appoint a panel to monitor the activities of the "bad police officers."
`Frequent transfers demoralised officers'
Deputy leader of the AIADMK O.Paneerselvam recalled various measures undertaken by the previous Government to modernise the police. Frequent transfers had demoralised police officers, he said.
Denies charge
Denying that the previous AIADMK Government had given concessions to a particular IMFL manufacturing unit, Mr.Paneerselvam said it was following the same procedures right from 1998 for purchasing IMFL. During 2001-2006, the State earned Rs.9,229 crore more than the revenue earned during 1996-2001 through excise duty, he added.

Community college system in focus

Recognition as alternative education demanded

CHENNAI : The community college system must be accorded recognition as an alternative education system in the country.
This demand was discussed at the fifth national consultation on the Indian Community College System and its future on Wednesday.
There are 96 community colleges across the State, including 20 in Chennai coordinated by the Madras Centre for Research and Development of Community Education (MCRDCE).
About 240 delegates gathered at M.O.P Vaishnav College to review the Document Indian Community College System and recommend feedback to the University Grants Commission (UGC). Community colleges aimed at providing job-oriented education. Women constituted about 75 per cent of the candidates trained in various vocational skills.
Inaugurating the two-day programme, David T.Hopper, U.S. Consul General, Chennai, spoke about the community college system in the U.S. that was attended by 45 per cent of undergraduate students.
Pointing out that India and U.S. shared experiences about educational systems, he said that a group of community college presidents from the American Association of Community Colleges and the Community Colleges for International Development would visit India, including Chennai, in March next year to learn about the community college system.
Higher education
While Indian students pursued higher education in U.S, Americans visited India to learn about the education system and success in producing several graduates in engineering and maths. About 80,000 Indian students had enrolled at themselves in American educational institutions, he added. K. Alaudiapillai, former secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, said the new entrants to workforce must be imparted vocational training for high productivity.
Quoting from a report on `India Vision 2020' , he said only five per cent of the country's labour force in the age group of 20-24 had undergone formal vocational training.
Xavier Alphonse, Director of MCRDCE, said the programme would also discuss the modalities for lateral entry into regular colleges and discuss the demand of scholarships and stipends for weaker sections. The candidates could be provided with one-third of the fees as scholarships.
The report would be presented the UGC and the Human Resource Development Ministry.
The organisation, which was upgraded to Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education, would be inaugurated on Friday. Nirmala Prasad, MOP College principal, also participated.

MMC includes yoga in preventive cardiology

Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery golden jubilee on September 1

CHENNAI : Yoga's medical benefits have prompted Madras Medical College to include it in its preventive cardiology programmes.
"A calm Indian way of life with yoga and meditation is an ounce of prevention which is better than tonnes of cure," R. Veerapandian, Medical Superintendent of the Government General Hospital said.
The MMC Dean, Kalavathi Ponniraivan, said that considering the importance of yoga for good health, programmes are being organised for the first year students in hostels. "It is optional at present, but soon I am planning to make it mandatory," she said.
K. Harsha Vardhan, head of the department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, said that a stressful life, increasing habit of eating fast foods rich in cholesterol and smoking were the main causes for heart ailments. By 2010, India will be on the top of the list of countries of people with heart disease, he said quoting a study.
Meditation
Prevention according to him was the solution. "Yoga and meditation have taken the world by storm. It is incorporated in allopathic treatment the world over," he said.
With regular physical exercise, a healthy diet and meditation, heart ailments can be avoided, the doctor said.
The doctor said that 80 per cent of the cases that came for treatment at the department involved rheumatic heart disease. The treatment was mainly by prevention at the school level itself and introducing a chapter on health education, Dr. Harshavardhan said.
The Cardio Thoracic Surgery department has around 100 patients on the waiting list; 400 open heart surgeries are done in a year at the super speciality department with five units. Awareness programmes are being conducted at the Taluk and District headquarter levels on prevention of heart diseases, Dr. Harshavarshan said.
He said that children and adults have to be watchful when they get a throat infection and attend to it immediately. "If it is a bacterial infection, it causes severe pain of the joints and slowly leads to heart failure," he said stressing that school children have to be screened for a healthy heart. The other ways of preventing heart diseases is by avoiding consanguineous marriages. The mother should take care of her health consciously during the period of the first trimester when the most important parts of the baby is being formed.
The golden jubilee of the Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery of the Madras Medical College is being held at the Madras Medical College Open Air Auditorium on September 1.
Tamil Nadu was the first State to start the department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery in 1956. The Government has allocated funds to upgrade the quality of heart care in Government hospitals. "This will drastically reduce the long list of patients waiting for heart surgery," Dr. Ponniraivan said.
Union Ministers including Dayanidhi Maran and Anbumani Ramadoss will participate in the celebrations.

Taj Mahal!!

Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal dates from the 17th century, as tomb for the favourite wife of Moghul-emperor Shah Jahan. She died at the birth of her 14th child in 1630. In grief, Shah Jahan decided to construct for her a monument to show his eternal love. It took 22 years to complete. The name Taj Mahal is derived from her nick-name Mumtaz Mahal: pearl or crown of the palace.According to legend, Shah Jahan planned to erect a black version as tomb for himself on the other side of the river. A bridge should connect the two monuments. The Taj is situated in the city of Agra, on the banks of the Yamuna-river. It is enclosed in a garden amidst fountains and ornamental trees. The walled complex further includes two mosques and an imposing gateway.

Visit July 1993

"Several points about the Taj Mahal that astonished me: ... How big it is ... How clean it is ... How symmetrical it is ... How many of the visitors are Indians, not Westerners ... How as you get closer, you see there is curlicue writing all over it ... How much it matches all its photographs."
What can I say more? Truly beautiful.

Reviews
Geeta (USA):
Regarding the so-called unfair entry fees for viewing the Taj, foreigners are still getting a bargain. Visit any "national heritage " sites abroad, and you'll know what I mean. The Taj should be subsidised for Indians; thats the only way the average Indian is going to be able to see and appreciate his heritage! So quit grumbling about the entry fees! The Taj is a bargain at any price!

():The Taj Mahal is the best! When I went there it was beautiful. I went in the evening and that day was perfect for looking at a wonder of the world.

():Taj Mahal is very good place to see & feel the love. i visited the Taj Mahal at recent it is very very beautiful. Please go to agra &see the Taj Mahal only one time in your life.

Christer Sundberg (Sweden):
At first light of dawn, when a cool breeze fills the air and the morning sun shines on the palace, Taj Mahal is at its height of beauty. Set against the azure skyline, it looks like a mirage in a desert - the greatest monument to love. It was exactly like this when, on an early December morning, I made my first visit to the legendary monument. It is certainly also true that it is a very special view to see the early morning sun rays embrace this absolutely magnificent white marbled tomb. The story has been told many times – of Shah Jahan’s favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died at the age of 39 when delivering a child and the greif that then made the Shah immortalize their love by building the “dream in marble” – 22 years in the making with the help of over 22.000 craftsmen. History tells that when Shah Jahan started to plan for his OWN mausoleum to be built in black marble across the river Yamuna, his son had just about enough of his fathers spending and locked him up in the Agra Fort. And there he sat until the day he died, gazing at the distant tomb of his long-lost wife. Almost makes you want to shed a tear, right..?

():Stunning- all I have to say.

():I happened to visit taj mahal in the evening around 5 PM on 19 th Nov, 2006. I am an Indian American. I am Indian by birth and I am proud to brag about Taj Mahal to my american born friends. Unfortunately,The way it has been maintained by Govt of India is not only pathetic, it outright stupid and cunter productive to revenue generation. What is wrong wityh these people. When I reached Taj mahal. It was totally dark. No lights of any kind. It was a disaster. I paid a long visit from delhi just too visit Taj. The approach roads in Agra are horrible. The over all condition surrounding Taj is un imaginable. How can you imagine a world tourist to visit a world renowned monument to be so neglected is beyond me. It is such a beautiful monument which a wonder of the world should be treated like a gem by the Govt. I wish it was in US. I heared a lot about India risisng. The infra structure and and road conditons are less than even third world countries. I got sick due to water conditions. Those who talk about India comparing with China and other regional super powers should better think about improving the infra structure by leaps and bounds otherwise forget it. I am not going to invite my American friends to visit India any more. These low level Govt officials and police are always trying to extract money out of you.I am really sorry about the difficulties of the world travellers visiting places like Taj and alike. Unfortunately, It is Govt of India losing the money. Just by imroviong IT base can take tyou only so far. You have to change the way you think and develope your civic sense. Remeber, I am an Indian by birth. I don't like to criticize my motherland. However, truth is truth.

JAGLO (INDIA):taj mahal in true sense is a perfect example of love, emotions and beauty.after learning a lot about in magazines and books, when i actually saw the monument i was SIMPLY AMAZED BY THIS white beauty.iwish icould capture this moment for my lifetime.it was or me an unforgettable moment. the only problem that confronts the tourists is the scarcity of CLEAN WATER.ALSO THE FOOD is not so happening. but ihope it is not such a big price for a lifetime experience

Arthur Pink (USA):The government of India runs a racket. They charge foreigners some 50 times the entrance price they charge Indians. No concessions for students or teachers. This policy is applied in racist fashion, as it is in hotels and domestic airlines, which also impose dual pricing. If you look Indian or have an Indian-sounding surname, you get in for the Indian rate. If you look European, you pay the vastly inflated rate. This government policy encourages even shopkeepers and taxi drivers to charge what must be considered dual rates.

jellie (Australia):i went to the Taj Mahal and found out about its culture and the love story of the emperor. i absolutely loved it im going back as soon as i get the money it is a fantastic place to go and i advise EVERYBODY to go! you will love it

surbo virdi (england):how can i start to describe this work of the ages it enters your mind and opens a part of you that was not there before. I visited this magnificent structure in 2003 for the second time i can only say that if words have to be used than use the words SEE FOR YOURSELF

shaili (Mauritius):Been to the one and only Taj Mahal. Was amazed when I first saw it - was shocked - what a beauty - its unbelievable to think its a creation of man ...The terrible thing is that admist dust and poverty, you enter a gate, and here stands a creation of love.

Rob Wilson (UK):Kipling said it was the 'Gateway through which all dreams must pass'.Tagore said that is was 'A tear on the face of Eternity'.Those descriptions sum this wonderful place up better than anything I could say. It's just a shame about the entry fees.

Isabella Detayley (Rome):I have been to the Taj Mahal and it was a beautiful experience ofcours in my country there are a lot of wonderful statues and buildings but my favorite is not the ones that are in Rome but The taj Mahal.

maya (england):my husband proposed to me whilst we were visiting the taj mahal, it is truly spiritual and amazing. you have to go to see it to get the true feel of the place.

Guru Dev (INDIA (now in USA)):The Taj Mahal is not a site... It is a LIFETIME EXPERIENCE.No matter how many times you see it in pictures & all the rationalising about how it does really look like the pictures (of course it will!!) the sheer geometry and scale of "the real thing" is something that just has to be EXPERIENCED!!What is avoidable is the city of AGRA... & the people there.. especially thos hovering around the fringes of the Tourism industry. The filth of the city & sheer rapacity of it's denizens is unbelievable. There are many parts of the world where tourists are conned & cheated but AGRA (actually starting in from Delhi) is really BAD!! The basic civic amenities & the local government are non-existent. So outside the cocoon of the 5 Star luxury tours get ready for the rough & tumble of a real mean town. Avoid TOUTS like the plague. Even if a price seems cheap quote just 30%.. etc. The Govt. is also in on the racket charging absurdly high fees at all points without providing any facilities or security. If your looking for a basic feature like a clewan usable loo... then forget it.. Just admire the beauty of the TAJ. I feel WORLD HERITAGE STATUS should be decide only after subjecting the environs & infrastructure to the STRICTEST POSSIBLE scrutiny. Even things like local political factors should be factored in... reward progressive & proactive states & & penalise others strictly..But the TAJ is still the TAJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! don't miss it.

Diana Schipper (Holland):Saw the first shooting star of my life over the Taj Mahal in 1993. A special place, a special day, special company too. The Taj Mahal is truly a spectacular symbol of love, art and craftmanship combined. I just hope the authorities can keep the place clean ....

Rita (India(but now in USA):i never visited Taj Mahal but i do really wanted to see it in reality as i always sees the picture of the Taj Mahal and it just gives me feeling that i wanted to go i am indian from india but now in USA i have hope that one day i will come and see Taj Mahal..

Barry Blackham (Yorkshire, England):What can you say about the Taj Mahal? It is certainly an emptional experience to stand in the shaddow (or shade!!) of such a magnificent work of art. People decribe it as a once in a lifetime experience to go there, now let me tell a secret, I have been there every year for the last 5 years. India and its people are the warmest and most welcoming. Forget the expensive package deal, if you know what you are doing you can go there for near enough the same price as going to Spain. My wife and I have been driven by private taxi from one side of India to the other, now that is an experience. How do you do it? You can fly to Bombay(Mumbai) for around £350 per person return for flight only. Searching the internet for hotels is ideal. You can get good quality air conditioned rooms or suits from about £10 per room per night up to about £25. You can go into the luxurious 5* places for anything up to £150 per room per night. Usually in the big Cities you want to be looking at about £20. If you get a map of India from any good book store, you can plan your own route. As a rough guide, 12 hours travel in a private taxi cost about £20 - £25. The hotel you stay in will get you a good driver who speaks english and who knows the area that you wish to go on your first leg. Take a leisurely drive and soak in the countryside towns and villages on your way. You will no doubt see weddings in villages, don't be afraid to stop and join in. If you feel like making a small gift of 200 indian rupees (about £3) to the bride and groom, do so. You will be invited to join in and eat with them. An excellent experience. When you start to become tired, simply ask your driver to find you a good hotel for the night. You have two choices then, you can send your driver back to Bombay and get your next driver from this hotel and so on. While you are on the road, you will want to stop off for something to eat. The driver will take you to a good clean place that he will know. His reward by the owners for taking you to his restaurant will be free food and drink for the driver. You can do this all the way accross India at your own leisure. If you find a particularly interesting place you can stay as long as you wish. You could simply tell the driver that you wish to drive for 6 hours with a one hour meal break in between and then stay at the nearest available hotel at the end of the 6 hours. You are paying so you do and go exactly where you want to go. This is what makes this way an exciting and enjoyable way. It is far better than a package where you have to be back at your hotel at 6 for tean and up at 7am to go on an excursion. Your whole holiday is one big excursion and you will see far more of the country and its friendly people. In the past, I have organised all my holiday via the internet. From being met at the airport by a driver holding a card with my family name on it to take us to our first hotel. Booked flights, trains everything. A 12 hour train journey in a 1st class air conditioned sleeper cost me £21 per person the last time I went in December 2001. We woke up nice and fresh having spent the night betewwn two clean, crisp white cotton sheets and nearly at our destination. You do not have to have a lot of money, most places take major credit cards and HSBC even have cash machines throughout India. The average cost of a good meal is from 50p to £1.50 per dish and I have seen 4 people eat one dish between them. I usually take about £2,000 with me (for 2 of us)and bring half of it back. It will work out about the same with 4 persons bacause the taxi is paid for if there is only 1 person or 4, it is the same. The hotels are by the room with an add on of about £2-£3 per extra bed per night. In India things are very cheap, an average factory worker working 12 hours per day 6 days per week brings home about £10 per week in wages. You are expected to haggle, if you go to a hotel and they say they want 1500 Indian Rupees a night for the room, tell them you will pay them 1200 rupees, they will either accept it or say you can have it for 1300. If they don't cut the price do not be scared to pick up your suitcases and start to walk out, they will call you back because 1200 rupees of yours are better than none. They know that if you go to the hotel next door, they would give you the room for 1200 rupees and they need the business. It's just the same when shopping, haggle. I usually find that whatever I buy, I get 2 for the original price of 1. They expect you to haggle. I look at it as though everyone in India is out to rip me off and I expect them to try. By haggleing, they are happy because they still manage to rip me off but I am also happy because they could have ripped me off for more.I hope that someone finds this feedback interesting and useful and wish that I had been given the benefits of someone elses experiences before I went the first time.India is a big and beautiful country, go out there and enjoy yourself. In 5 years I have never ever had an upset stomach and if you do not take any notice of what else I've said, please take notice of this.ONLY DRINK BOTTLED WATER THAT COMES TO YOU WITH THE SEAL INTACT. NEVER EVER DRING LOCAL OR TAP WATER. ONLY EAT FOOD THAT YOU SEE COOKED IN FRONT OF YOU. NEVER EVER EAT ANY FOOD THAT IS PRE-COOKED AND DISPLAYED IN GLASS CASES.Enjoy your holiday

Kuselan with 1200 prints?
Grapevine has it that Rajinikanth might even take a mini-trip to Japan to promote the film. Japan, on its end, has extended a warm invite to the stalwart to attend the highly acclaimed Tokyo Film Fest.

Breaking all records set by Sivaji and Dasavathaaram, which were released worldwide with an approximate number of 760 and 1,050 prints respectively, Superstar Rajinikanth starrer Kuselan, directed by P. Vasu, will be released across the globe with around 1200 prints, sources said.
Rajinikanth's blockbuster Sivaji: The Boss was released with 760 prints, out of which 300 had been released in Telugu, 303 in Tamil, 145 in overseas, and 12 in North India. Meanwhile, Kamal Hassan's magnum opus Dasavathaaram opened with approximately 1,050 prints in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
Some theatres in Chennai screened as many as 45 shows a day across 21 theatres as opposed to Rajinikanths Sivaji, which was released across 17 theatres in the city. Pyramid Saimira, worldwide distributors of Kuselan, is now involved in distributing the film in maximum theatres in India and overseas. The film is expected to hit North India with around 150 Prints.
Kuselan, which was delayed due to post production work, will be released on August 1. This bilingual movie, a remake of the Malayalam movie Katha Parayumbol, will be released simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu as Kuselan and Kathanayukudu respectively. It is learned that the movie will feature Rajinikanth in 20 costumes, including an Egyptian Paraoh.
Meanwhile, recently released audio CDs and cassettes of Kuselan have opened to record sales, with reports that more than 2 lakh CDs have been sold within just 2 days all over the world. Apart from CDs, 50000 cassettes were reportedly sold in rural areas, breaking Sivaji's audio sales record.

Aegan to release in September

The film is a remake of the Bollywood block-buster 'Main Hoon Na'. His previous film, 'Billa', a remake of another Bolly flick, 'Don', did badly at the box-office, it remains to be seen what'll happen to this one. Smart move? >>

Swashbuckling style: Ajith in Billa

Heres news that will set Ajith's fans hearts racing. Ajith-starrer Aegan, which has been in production since the latter half of the year 2007 will hit screens in September 2008 worldwide, according to sources of Ayngaran International, producers of this film.
Aegan is the remake of the Hindi blockbuster Main Hoon Na. There is a beautiful coincidence between the original version and its Tamil version. Farah Khan, the famous dance choreographer in Bollywood turned into a director with Main Hoon Na and Raju Sundaram, famous actor-dance-choreographer of the South turns director with Aegan.
In Aegan, Ajith plays the role essayed by Shahrukh Khan in the original and Suman plays the villain. At present, a spectacular stunt scene involving these two actors is being shot at Ennore. The stunt choreographer Ram Laxman has done an exceptional job and has created some fabulous stunt scenes, which will make one look through the violence and marvel at the splendid spectacle shown.
Interestingly, in the Hindi version, Shahrukh Khan choreographed a few stunt scenes which came out marvellously on the screen. Music of the film is by Yuvanshankar Raja. Aegan is yet another deviation from regular masala Tamil films, just like Billa (2007) in terms of splendour. Though it is filled with Indian sentiments, the way it has been packaged and presented should even put Hollywood film makers to shame.

Anushka in love?
Rumour mills are running amock! Is the lithe lady in love with a high profile producer or another hot young movie star? Is love in the air or is it considered taboo in this conservative industry? Find out now! >>
Wet or wild: Anushka drips!
Hot Genelia: Cool Attitude
Sexy Sneha shows off her pout

Anushka's debut opposite Nagarjuna in Super was exactly that: super. Her big bang debut gave her the chance to act with Sumanth in Mahanandi, with Ravi Teja in Vikramarkudu, with Gopichand in Lakshyam and with Jagapati Babu in Swagatham. Right now, she has paired up with Venkatesh in Chintakayala Ravi.
This ex-yoga teacher, who owes her great shape to all those 'asanas', was never shy about showing off her slim, toned body on screen. Her career graph zoomed due her ability to carry off the teeniest costumes with elan. Wanting to prove that her emoting skills are just as good, if not better than, her toned structure, Anushka signed up for Arundhati, a heroine-oriented movie with plenty of scope for the heroine to display her acting talents. Naturally, with all that success in such a short time, is it any surprise that shes been linked with a big time producer and now, with a young hero, all within a short span of a few months!
Rumours ran rampant of her driver being fired, as it was suspected he was responsible for the nasty gossip. These rumours come at a time when Anushka can ill afford to be linked to anyone on a permanent basis as Tollywood is shy of 'engaged' heroines. It seems like any heroine who shows the tiniest bit of talent and ambition falls prey to the nasty rumour mill that would like nothing better than a good ringside seat while the actress' reputation is torn to shreds.

Map details global water stress!!!

See the map The alarming extent of water scarcity across the world is detailed in a map compiled by a leading environmental think tank.
It shows two key types of scarcity; water is said to be either physically scarce or economically scarce.
The map appears in a report by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) on the use of water in agriculture.
Agricultural activities consume most water on a worldwide basis.
This is due to the enormous amounts needed to produce food.
READ THE REPORT
Insights from the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture [2.7MB]
Most computers will open this document automatically, but you may need Adobe Reader
Download the reader hereThe IWMI's Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture says one third of the world population face some form of water scarcity.
Economic water scarcity occurs due to a lack of investment and is characterised by poor infrastructure and unequal distribution of water.
Physical scarcity occurs when the water resources cannot meet the demands of the population. Arid regions are most associated with physical water scarcity. But the IWMI says there is an alarming trend in artificially-created scarcity - even in areas where water is apparently abundant.
This is largely due to overuse; agriculture uses up to 70 times more water to produce food than is used in drinking and other domestic purposes, including cooking, washing and bathing.
The results are desiccated and polluted rivers, declining groundwater and problems of allocation, in which some people win out in access to water over others.
Environment trade-off
Egypt imports more than half of its food because it does not have enough water to grow it domestically.
Australia is faced with major water scarcity in the Murray-Darling Basin as a result of diverting large quantities of water for use in agriculture.

And the shrunken Aral Sea remains one of the most visible examples where massive diversions of water to agriculture have caused widespread water scarcity, says the report, along with an environmental catastrophe.
"It is possible to reduce water scarcity, feed people and address poverty, but the key trade-off is with the environment," said IWMI's David Molden, who led the assessment.
"People and their governments will face some tough decisions on how to allocate and manage water."
Frank Rijsberman, director general of the institute, told the BBC that one quarter of the world's population lived in river basins where water is physically scarce. Another one billion people live in river basins where water was economically scarce.
As a result, he said, many people around the world dependent on rivers, lakes and other wetlands risk falling into poverty.
Rising demand
The assessment says urbanisation and economic growth will drive food demand towards a higher food intake per capita and richer, more varied diets in coming decades.
Producing milk, meat, sugar, oils and vegetables requires more water than cereals and a different style of water management.
The total amount of water used up in crop production each year could rise from 7,200 cubic km to as much as 13,500 cubic km by 2050.
David Molden said that responding to growing food demand by diverting more water to agriculture and expanding the total area used for growing crops and livestock would exert a major toll on the environment.
Instead, the assessment urges farmers to grow more food without placing added pressure on the environment.
"We must grow more crop per drop, more meat and milk per drop, and more fish per drop," said Mr Molden.
The World Water Week meeting in Stockholm runs from 20-26 August.

Physical water scarcity: More than 75% of river flows are allocated to agriculture, industries or domestic purposes (accounting for recycling of return flows). This definition of scarcity - relating water availability to water demand - implies that dry areas are not necessarily water-scarce, eg Mauritania.
Approaching physical water scarcity: More than 60% of river flows are allocated. These basins will experience physical water scarcity in the near future.
Economic water scarcity: Water resources are abundant relative to water use, with less than 25% of water from rivers withdrawn for human purposes, but malnutrition exists. These areas could benefit by development of additional blue and green water, but human and financial capacity are limiting.
Little or no water scarcity: Abundant water resources relative to use. Less than 25% of water from rivers is withdrawn for human purposes.
